What should I do if I smell natural gas?

The "pungent odor" aroma added to natural gas is often compared to sulfur or rotten eggs. If you smell gas in your business, or suspect a gas leak, call us right away.

If you smell gas please follow these steps:

• If there is a kitchen, check to be sure any ranges and oven controls are turned off.
• Leave immediately. Instruct others to leave.
• Don't operate electrical appliances or switches. This can cause sparks.
• Don't smoke or light matches.
• Open windows and doors on your way out. Don’t re-enter the building to open windows.
• Call the Liberty Utilities emergency number or dial 911 from a mobile phone or neighbor’s phone. Dial 711 if you are hearing impaired. Don’t send an email.
• Be sure to tell us the exact street location and cross streets. We're here 365 days a year to serve you. We'll be there as soon as possible to make sure that the situation is safe.

If you suspect a leak inside your business

• Evacuate the premises and leave the door open when you exit.
• Do not use electrical switches, telephones, appliances, garage door openers, etc.
• Do not use lighters or matches and do not smoke.
• When you arrive at a safe location, call Liberty Utilities immediately.

If you suspect a leak outside your business

• Leave your location immediately.
• When you arrive at a safe location, call Liberty Utilities immediately.
• Keep clear of the area.
• Do not start any motors or motor vehicles near the area of the gas odor.
• Do not use lighters or matches and do not smoke.
